On Monday, August 8, a motorist died in a wrong way crash on Interstate 40.
According to authorities, the accident happened at around 3.30 a.m. when police received a call saying that there was vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of the interstate in Crawford County.
Trooper Roy Moomey, aged 41 of Van Buren was dispatched to the scene in his 2014 Dodge State Police Cruiser and was crashed into head on by 24 year old Matthew C. Coate of Fort Smith who was driving a 2012 Ford.
Coates died in the collision and the trooper, who is the son of a Little Rock police officer,was taken to Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith and was in serious but stable condition. He has two broken legs, broken ankle, broken wrist, fractured vertebrae, broken pelvis and ribs and a punctured lung.
Coates was said to be drunk at the time of the accident but toxicology is awaited for confirmation, and the investigation is ongoing,
